Exterior Auto Detailing in the Florida Keys: Wheel and Tire Cleaning vs. Polishing
By the Leoserve Team

Exterior auto detailing for wheels and tires is really three separate jobs: cleaning, protecting and polishing. Our car detailing service includes washing rims and tires, offers tire protectant with a wash and wax, and does not polish rims. Here is what each job means and what to ask before you book.
Key Points
- Cleaning, tire protectant and rim polishing are three different jobs, and Leoserve treats them differently.
- At Leoserve, washing rims and tires is included in the price. Tire protectant is included with a wash and wax, and available as an add-on with a wash.
- We don't offer rim polishing.
- Wheel finishes vary, so your vehicle maker's guidance comes before any general advice, ours included.
- If your wheels have an unusual finish or existing damage, tell us when you book.
What does exterior auto detailing include for wheels and tires?
In a Leoserve car detail, washing the rims and tires is included in the price. Protecting the tires and polishing the rims are separate questions, and the answer to each depends on the service you choose.
| Job | What it means | At Leoserve |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning rims and tires | Washing dirt and road film off the wheels and tires | Included in the price |
| Tire protectant | A product applied to the tires as a finishing step | Included with a wash and wax; an add-on with a wash |
| Rim polishing | Using a polish on the wheel surface to change its shine | Not offered |
Most confusion comes from mixing these up. A clean wheel is not the same as a polished one, and a tire that has protectant on it isn't necessarily cleaner than one without. If you are comparing service tiers, our guide to auto detailing packages in the Florida Keys covers the bigger picture.

Why do wheels and tires need their own attention?
Wheel finishes need their own care guidance. A product intended for painted bodywork may not suit your wheels, so check the vehicle maker's instructions for each surface.
Chevrolet's 2026 Silverado 1500 owner's manual is one example. In its Vehicle Care chapter, wheels and wheel trim get their own section, apart from the paint-care advice. Its wheel-care caution says: "Use only GM approved cleaners." That is guidance for that maker's wheels, so check your own owner's manual or ask your wheel maker for instructions that apply to yours.
For us, this is also why the question of finish matters. Painted, chrome, polished, matte and coated wheels do not all behave the same way.
What should you check on your wheels before a detail?
Look at the finish and the condition, then tell the team what you see. A wash can clean a wheel, but it can't repair one.
- The finish. Is it painted, chrome, bare polished metal, matte, coated or something aftermarket? If you aren't sure, check your owner's manual or the paperwork from the wheel's maker.
- Existing damage. Scrapes from a curb, peeling or flaking finish, and cracks are worth noting before anyone starts. Cleaning does not fix them, and a wheel or tire shop is the right place to have them assessed.
- Tire condition. Cuts, bulges or worn tread are a job for a tire shop, not a detail.
- Anything unusual. Custom wheels, oversized wheels or special tires are worth mentioning when you book.

What does tire protectant do, and do you need it?
Tire protectant is a product applied to the tires as a finishing step. At Leoserve it is included with a wash and wax, and it is available as an add-on when you book a wash.
It is a good question to ask, rather than assume, because not every tire product is the same. Chevrolet's manual cautions that petroleum-based tire dressing products "may damage the paint finish and/or tires," and it tells owners to remove any overspray from painted surfaces. If you apply a tire product yourself between details, read the label and keep it off your paint. If you want to know what we apply, ask when you book.
Is rim polishing part of a Leoserve detail?
No. We wash rims and tires, but we don't offer rim polishing. The machine polishing and paint correction on our services page are for painted panels that are faded or scratched, not for wheels.
If you want your rims polished, that is a different specialty. Check with your wheel's maker or a wheel specialist first. Chevrolet's wheel-care caution also warns against abrasive polishes because of the risk of surface damage.
What should you ask when you book?
Short answers beat assumptions. These questions help the team match the job to your vehicle:
- Is washing my rims and tires included in the service I'm booking?
- Is tire protectant included, or is it an add-on for this service?
- What can you do with my wheel finish, which is painted, chrome, polished, matte or aftermarket?
- Can you note the scrapes and wear on my wheels before you start?
- If I'm not sure of the finish, what should I check?

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Leoserve clean wheels and tires?
Yes. Washing rims and tires is included in the price of our car detailing.
Is tire protectant included?
It depends on the service. Tire protectant is included with a wash and wax, and it is available as an add-on with a wash.
Do you polish rims?
No. We don't offer rim polishing. Our machine polishing and paint correction are for painted panels, not wheels.
Can I use any wheel cleaner at home?
Not necessarily. Wheel finishes differ, and makers publish their own instructions. Chevrolet, for example, directs owners to use GM-approved wheel cleaners. Check your owner's manual for instructions that apply to your own vehicle.
Can a detail fix damaged wheels?
No. Cleaning removes dirt but doesn't repair curb scrapes, peeling finish or cracks. A wheel or tire shop can assess those.
