How to Wash a Car to Prevent Rust in the Florida Keys
By the Leoserve Team

Learning how to wash a car to prevent rust in the Florida Keys starts with regular cleaning and prompt attention to damaged paint. Remove salt deposits and have chips or corrosion assessed by a repair shop. Our car detailing service helps care for the finish; washing alone cannot make a car rust-proof.
Key Points
- Remove salt deposits promptly and have chips or deep scratches assessed before exposed metal deteriorates.
- Include lower panels, wheel areas and visible chips in a visual condition check.
- A quick rinse is not a wash. Salt film needs a proper hand wash, and tap water can leave spots in the Florida sun.
- Wax typically lasts 2–3 months in Keys conditions. A ceramic coating is a one-time application with an annual inspection.
- Without a biweekly or monthly maintenance plan, we recommend a full detail every 2–3 months.
Why does salt cause rust on cars in the Florida Keys?
Salt deposits and paint damage both deserve attention. Washing removes surface contamination; chipped paint and corrosion need assessment by an appropriate repair shop.
Chevrolet's 2026 Montana owner's manual lists ocean salt among deposits to remove promptly. It also recommends prompt repair of chips and deep scratches because "bare metal will corrode quickly." This is general manufacturer guidance, not a study of corrosion rates in the Florida Keys.
Chevrolet's 2026 Silverado 1500 owner's manual makes a similar point about salt on a finish. It tells owners to "wash it often," lists "calcium chloride and other salts" among the materials to remove "as soon as possible," and warns that they "can damage the finish if they remain on painted surfaces." That manual is written about road salt rather than sea air, so read it as a general caution about salt left on paint, not a Keys-specific study.
Which areas should you look over?
Check visible paint damage and areas where dirt or moisture has accumulated. These are examples for a visual check, not a prediction of where rust will start on your car:
- Wheel wells and the edges of the fenders
- Door sills and the lower edges of the doors
- The bottom of the bumpers and rocker panels
- Around the trunk or hatch seal and the fuel door
- Any stone chip, scratch or scraped spot, on any panel
For visible grime on lower panels, see our guide to road film and lower panels.
How should you wash a car to prevent rust?
Wash it regularly, by hand, with the right water and the right contact tools, and don't let visible salt film sit. Use a method suited to your vehicle's finish, and have damaged paint assessed separately.
This is how we wash a car at Leoserve:
- DI water throughout. Deionized (DI) water has its minerals removed, so it dries without the spots tap water can leave. Learn why in our post on DI water and water spots.
- Hand wash every panel. We use a wool wash pad or mitt, or a car-safe sponge.
- Don't forget the lower panels, wheels and tires. Washing rims and tires is included in the price.
- Finish with protection. Depending on the service, that means a machine-applied wax or a ceramic coating.

What shouldn't you do when you see salt on your car?
Don't wipe it off dry, and don't rely on a quick rinse. Dry wiping can drag grit across the finish and scratch it. A rinse can remove some loose material, but it doesn't replace a contact wash, and tap water left to dry in the sun can leave mineral spots.
If a car is heavily coated in salt film, a proper hand wash is the safer fix. Our guide to salt air car care in Key West goes through what to do between full details.
How often should you wash your car in the Keys?
As soon as you can after heavy salt exposure, and on a regular schedule in between. Cars that sit outside, drive often or park near the water benefit from a biweekly or monthly maintenance plan.
| If your car... | A sensible schedule |
|---|---|
| Is parked outside or near the water | Biweekly or monthly maintenance wash |
| Is garaged and driven occasionally | Maintenance wash as it gets dirty, plus a full detail every 2–3 months |
| Isn't on a maintenance plan | A full detail every 2–3 months |
| Has a ceramic coating | Regular washes, plus the annual coating inspection |
After a long drive, a storm or time near salt spray, don't wait for the next appointment. The calendar is a baseline, not a reason to ignore visible salt.
Does wax or ceramic coating help prevent rust?
They help care for the paint's surface. Neither one repairs corrosion or makes a car rust-proof, and neither one replaces washing.
- Wax. We mainly use Meguiar's, machine-applied with orbital buffers that stop under too much pressure. Under the Florida sun it typically lasts 2–3 months.
- Ceramic coating. Liquid Armour 9H is a one-time exterior application with an annual inspection and a registered 5-year warranty when properly maintained. A ceramic coating is applied at our Stock Island shop after decontamination, clay bar and machine polish.
A coated car still collects salt, so it still needs regular, careful washing.

What should you do about chips, scratches and rust spots?
Have chips and deep scratches assessed promptly. Chevrolet's Silverado manual recommends early chip and scratch repair to avoid corrosion, with larger areas of finish damage assessed by a body and paint shop.
If you see bubbling, discoloration or flaking, ask a body shop to identify the cause. Cleaning and polishing do not repair corroded metal.
What about the underside of the car?
For underbody condition or corrosion concerns, ask a qualified repair shop for an inspection. An exterior hand wash is not a substitute for that assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does salt air rust a car?
Chevrolet includes ocean salt among deposits to remove promptly and advises prompt attention to paint damage because bare metal can corrode. Regular cleaning and early repair assessment have different roles; a wash or coating is not a rust-proofing treatment.
How often should I wash my car in the Florida Keys?
If your car isn't on a biweekly or monthly maintenance plan, we recommend a full detail every 2–3 months. Cars parked outside or near the water, or driven often, may need maintenance sooner, and should be cleaned promptly after heavy salt exposure.
Does ceramic coating stop rust?
No coating makes a car rust-proof. A ceramic coating protects the paint's surface and can make washing easier, but it doesn't repair rust that has started and it doesn't replace washing. We apply it once and inspect it every year.
Is it okay to just rinse the salt off with a hose?
A rinse can remove some loose salt, but it isn't a substitute for a careful hand wash, and tap water can leave mineral spots in the sun. We wash with deionized (DI) water, using a wool pad or mitt or a car-safe sponge.
Do you wash tires and rims?
Yes. Washing rims and tires is included in the price, and tire protectant is included with a wash and wax. We don't offer rim polishing.
