Pickup Truck Detailing in the Florida Keys: Salt, Sand and Boat-Ramp Spray

Por el equipo de Leoserve

Clean pickup truck by the water after truck detailing in the Florida Keys

Truck detailing in the Florida Keys has to deal with more than everyday road dust. Pickups here haul gear to the beach, tow boats to salt-water ramps and park near the water, so salt and sand build up in places a sedan never sees. Our car and truck detailing service handles cars, trucks and bikes, at your door or in our Stock Island shop.

Key Points

  • Trucks in the Keys collect salt and sand in more places than cars: the tailgate, the bed, the wheel wells and the rear of the truck.
  • Towing to a boat ramp puts the back of the truck close to salt spray, so the rear panels and lower edges need attention after launch days.
  • Leoserve hand-washes trucks with deionized (DI) water and wool pads or car-safe sponges, never brushes on paint. We also clean truck beds, bed floors and toppers.
  • Wax typically lasts 2–3 months in Keys conditions. A ceramic coating is a one-time application with an annual inspection, and we coat pickups as well as cars.
  • Without a biweekly or monthly maintenance plan, we recommend a full detail every 2–3 months.

Why do trucks need different detailing in the Florida Keys?

A pickup in the Keys usually works harder than a car, and it gets dirty in different places. It carries coolers, fishing gear and wet beach equipment, it often tows, and it's parked outside near the water.

That means more salt and sand in the corners: around the tailgate, in the bed, behind the wheels and on the rear bumper. The bigger panels also give salt film more surface to settle on.

Truck makers stress regular washing too. Chevrolet's 2026 Silverado 1500 owner's manual puts it simply: "To preserve the vehicle's finish, wash it often and out of direct sunlight."

What happens to a truck on a boat-ramp day?

When you back a trailer down a ramp, the rear of the truck gets close to the water. Spray, splashes and salty drips off the trailer land on the bumper, the tailgate and the lower rear panels.

That salt doesn't go away on its own. It dries into a film on the paint. The same Silverado manual lists "calcium chloride and other salts" among the materials to wash from the finish "as soon as possible," and warns that they "can damage the finish if they remain on painted surfaces." The sensible habit is to get boat-ramp salt off sooner rather than later.

Salt and road grime also collect low on every vehicle. We cover that in more detail in our post on road film and lower panels.

How does Leoserve wash a pickup truck?

We wash trucks the same careful way we wash cars: by hand, with deionized (DI) water at every stage. DI water has its minerals removed, so it dries without the spots tap water can leave on big, flat panels like a hood or tailgate.

Every panel is hand-washed with a wool wash pad or a car-safe sponge. We never touch truck paint with brushes, and we never towel-dry.

On a truck, we also take extra care with:

  • The tailgate and rear bumper, where boat-ramp spray and sand collect
  • The truck bed: the bed floor, the bed rails and the edges around the bed
  • Toppers, the hard caps that cover the bed
  • Wheels and tires
  • Running boards and the lower edges of the doors

Learn why the water matters in our post on DI water and water spots.

Do you clean the truck bed and topper?

Yes. We clean truck beds, bed floors and toppers. The bed is where wet coolers, fishing gear, sand and salt water end up, so it often needs as much attention as the paint.

Bed floors have a hard life. Chevrolet's Silverado manual notes that spray-in bedliners "can fade from oxidation, road dirt, heavy-duty hauling, and hard water stains." Regular cleaning keeps that grime from settling in, and DI water dries without the mineral spots tap water can leave.

Does a truck interior need detailing too?

Yes, and often more than a car's. A truck cab collects sand from boots and beach trips, salt from wet gear, and sunscreen and spills from long days outside.

Our interior detailing covers "sand, salt, sunscreen, and spills," with deep-cleaned seats, carpets and surfaces. For a work or fishing truck, that usually means getting sand out of the floor mats and seat seams and cleaning the surfaces people touch most.

How should you protect a truck's paint in the Keys?

Protect it with wax for shorter-term protection or a ceramic coating for long-term protection, and keep it washed either way. Big panels take longer to treat, so it's worth choosing the option that fits how you use the truck.

OptionWhat it isGood fit if...
WaxMeguiar's, machine-applied with orbital buffers that stop under too much pressure. Typically lasts 2–3 months in Keys conditions. You want a simple layer of protection and don't mind reapplying
Ceramic coatingLiquid Armour 9H, a one-time exterior application with an annual inspection and a 5-year registered warranty when properly maintainedThe truck lives in the Keys year-round and you want long-term protection
Regular washesA biweekly or monthly maintenance planThe truck tows, hauls or parks near the water every week

Ceramic coating isn't only for cars. We coat cars, trucks, RVs, boats, jet skis, bikes and golf carts. On a truck, a Liquid Armour ceramic coating is applied at our Stock Island shop after decontamination, clay bar and machine polish. A coated truck still needs washing: the coating protects the paint, but salt and grime still land on it.

If your truck isn't on a biweekly or monthly maintenance plan, we recommend a full detail every 2–3 months.

How often should you wash a truck that tows to the water?

As soon as practical after salt exposure, and on a regular schedule in between. A truck that tows to a boat ramp or parks by the water every week benefits from a biweekly or monthly maintenance plan rather than waiting for a full detail.

If you run a few work trucks for a business, our post on fleet detailing in Key West covers keeping several vehicles on a schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you detail trucks or only cars?

We detail cars, trucks and bikes, along with RVs. Trucks get the same DI-water hand wash with wool pads or car-safe sponges, and never brushes on the paint. We also clean truck beds, bed floors and toppers.

Can you come to my house to wash my truck?

Yes. We're a mobile service first, and we come to homes and businesses anywhere from Key West to Key Largo. Ceramic coating and paint correction are done in our Stock Island shop.

How long does wax last on a truck in the Keys?

We mainly use Meguiar's wax, machine-applied, and under the Florida sun it typically lasts 2–3 months. A ceramic coating is a one-time application that we inspect annually.

Should I wash my truck after launching my boat?

Yes, as soon as practical. Salt left on the rear bumper, tailgate and lower panels dries into a film, so the sooner it comes off, the better. A regular maintenance plan keeps it from building up.

Is a ceramic coating worth it on a work truck?

It depends on how long you keep the truck and how much salt it sees. We coat pickups as well as cars, RVs, boats, jet skis, bikes and golf carts. A ceramic coating is a one-time exterior application with an annual inspection and a 5-year registered warranty when properly maintained, while wax typically lasts 2–3 months in Keys conditions. Either way, the truck still needs regular washing.
